Frequently Asked Questions

An LED strip light, also know as LED tape and ribbon light, is composed by SMD LEDs, PCB board and resistors, usually comes with a 3M adhesive backing. It is widely used to create linear lighting effects, such as under cabinet lighting, cove lighting, architecture lighting, mirror lighting, pool lighting, grow lighting, decorative lighting and other linear lighting projects.

LED light strips are safe enough as it is a low voltage design and as long as they’re installed and operated properly. For example, indoor lights shouldn’t be installed outside, ensure continuous maximum connection as per manufacturer’s guidance etc.

Our standard LED chip brand is Epistar and San An. Cree, Osram, Samsung chips can be customized as requested. PCB materials are pure copper double layer 2oz – 4oz based on different types.

Our single color LED tape lights are available in warm white, natural white, cool white, yellow, purple, red, green and blue. Our dual color tape features warm white and cool white simultaneously, while RGB color changing tape light can emit any color depending on the controller. Customized colors for special project are also available.

CRI/RA is color rendering index. It is the measurement of an item color look under the light source when compared with sunlight. CRI of 80+ is the industry-standard for most applications while a CRI of 90+ tends to be necessary for situations that need color accuracy. Shine standard CRI for led strip light are 80 and 90. Customized CRI 95 or 98 led tape light are available.

LED binning and selection is a vital process of LED spectral division. We use the same color BIN for each manufacturing run of LEDs within their color temperatures. This means that when you order a 4000K natural white LED strip light today and order the same product next year, there will be no perceivable differences to the human eye. We bin to 3 MacAdams and have strict in-house batch testing to make sure that your lights arrive perfect.

Brightness and current for Shine LED chips are as following:

SMD3528: 7-8lm@20mA
SMD5050: 21-23lm@60mA
SMD2835: 24-26lm@60mA
SMD5630: 25-27lm@60mA
SMD3014: 10-12lm@30mA
SMD2216: 10-11lm@30mA

All of our LED strip lights and neon LED flex have a beam angle of 120°, COB strip lights beam angle is 180°. You can use an aluminum channel with a special lens to change the beam angle as required.

LED strip light brightness is dependent upon the density of LEDs on the strip light. Take 30LEDs/m, 60LEDs/m, 120LEDs/m SMD2835 LED tape lights as an example, 120LEDs/m is the brightest LED tape light, delivering a super bright output designed for task lighting. 60LEDs/m is bright enough for a massive range of undercabinet and accent lighting. 30LEDs/m is less bright and mostly for auxiliary lighting applications. All Shine white LED light strips are fully dimmable from 0%-100%.

Yes, all of our mono LED strips and mono neon strips are dimming from 0-100%. You can use a PWM controller to control. Shine full strip products can be dimmed by 0-10V, DMX512 and Dali system.

Although LED tape light is not able to bend 90° or make sharp turns. The preferred method to make turns is to use wall corner connectors. For more detailed guide on LED strip light accessories, please contact our sales consultant.

The variations for IP65, IP67, & IP68 strips come with the protection against liquids.

IP65: Water resistant

Protected against water jets from any angle

Do NOT submerge IP65 LED lights, these are not waterproof.

Waterproof process: silicon glue coating + 3M adhesive back

IP67: Water resistant plus

Protected against the events of temporary submersion (10 minutes)

Do NOT submerge IP67 LED lights for extended periods, these are not waterproof

Waterproof process: full silicon tube

IP68: Waterproof

Protected against the events of permanent submersion up to 3 meters

Waterproof process: silicon extrusion

  1. Make sure you follow the positive side of the flex strip down through the solderless connector wire to the power supply. Red/black can either mean (+) or (-) depending on what side of the LED flex strip you have hooked the connector to.

  2. Another common problem is that the solderless connector may be installed upside down; repeat steps above and try again.

  3. MAKE SURE the tray is closed all the way. Be gentle!

  4. Check your power supply and make sure it is hooked up properly, with correct (+) and (–) as well.

  5. Are you using 12V LED strips with a 24V Power supply? This will not work.

  6. How long of LED strip are you using VS how large your power unit is? If you are using 1 reel of 72W strip with 24V 2.5amp power unit, it will not work because the power unit is too small.

Our IP68 RGB range LED strip lights and Pro RGB neon flex strips are submersible. They can be installed in depth up to 3 meters.

  • Use the appropriate power for the LED strip, generally recommendation for 8mm PCB strip light with a maximum wattage of 15W/m, 10mm / 12mm PCB strip with maximum wattage of 20W/m.
  • Attach the LED strip light with double side thermal conductive tape to an aluminum profile for better heat dissipation.
  • Ensure a smooth ventilated environment for the strip light installation.
  • Maximum ambient temperature should not exceed 50℃.

Thermal system that conducts heat away from sensitive components (such as LED chips and other electronics), which prolongs LED strip light life span. The most common heat sinks for led strip lights are aluminum profiles.

Frosted cover helps diffuse the light and reduce ‘hotspots’ and may typically reduce the brightness up to 30%.

Ensure the power supply output voltage match the lighting’s rated voltage. A higher wattage power supply will do no harm to the LED tape lighting.

A higher wattage power supply will not increase the brightness of the LED tape light.

All light sources degrade over time. LM80 is the method for measuring how much lumen depreciation the light source will suffer. With the development of mature SMD packaging technology, LEDs typically will not fail , but rather degrade beyond useful life output.
